Green Building Standards
On green building projects, an important consideration is how to manage processes in order to comply with green certification programs. Now, a new consensus standard can help contractors design, construct, and maintain energy-efficient buildings.
The GBI (Green Building Initiative), www.thegbi.org, Portland, Ore., a nonprofit organization, has developed a new consensus-based standard for the design, construction, and operations of environmentally friendly buildings.
The GBI recently was notified that the ANSI (American National Standards Institute), www.ansi.org, Washington, D.C., has reviewed and approved the standard.
The ANSI/GBI 01-2010: Green Building Assessment Protocol for Commercial Buildings identifies seven areas for green building assessment including project management, site, water, energy, emissions, indoor environment, and resources.
“The approval of our process enables the GBI to continue its leadership role accelerating the adoption of sustainable building practices across the U.S.,” says Ward Hubbell, president, GBI. “The use of an inclusive, consensus-based process ensures a high level of confidence in our assessment and certification programs.”
Construction companies working on green building projects seeking any type of certification must take the proper steps to ensure documentation associated with the project is managed and stored according to the standards.
On construction projects, spreadsheets and FTP sites were initially the primary means to manage information associated with green building projects. Now, many AEC (architecture, engineering, and construction) teams are increasingly using technology to enable a higher level of collaboration on green building projects and keep documentation on hand for the certification process.
It will be interesting to watch as the ANSI/GBI 01-2010 is adopted in the construction industry and the role technology will ultimately play in managing the data associated with green building.
