Smart Devices on Air Force Base

A number of programs are underway across government departments to reduce energy consumption. One recent example is the Resident Energy Technology Program at Travis Air Force Base in California. This program focuses on energy conservation and cost savings for residents using smart in-home energy monitoring devices and behavior change techniques.

Balfour Beatty Capital Group, www.bbcgrp.com, Newtown Square, Pa., and its subsidiaries Balfour Beatty Communities, www.balfourbeattycommunities.com, Newtown Square, Pa., and Balfour Beatty Energy Solutions, www.balfourbeattyenergy.com, Nashville, Tenn., are collaborating in an effort to put new technologies in place and teach military residents how to reduce their energy consumption.

The objective of the program is to provide technology tools to help lower overall energy consumption while also providing customized coaching for military residents from energy experts.

Balfour Beatty Communities does the design, development, construction/renovation, operation, and management of military housing projects for the Dept. of Defense, www.defense.gov, Washington, D.C., while Balfour Beatty Energy Solutions provides services for renewable energy, energy efficiency, utilities management, and sustainability initiatives.

According to Balfour Beatty Capital Group, the program will use a variety of elements to help minimize the total cost of energy use including energy monitors, energy-saving technology, and energy audits, among others.

The Dept. of Defense has a number of energy conservation programs, in an effort to reduce its overall energy consumption by 20%.
