Bridging the Gaps

December 28, 2009

In order to successfully execute on collaboration initiatives such as BIM (building information modeling), contractors need a strong set of technology tools to enable a high-level of interoperability.

As one example, Autodesk, www.autodesk.com, San Rafael, Calif., and Trimble, www.trimble.com, Sunnyvale, Calif., have teamed up to create a data exchange tool, which will allow information to be sent from AutoCAD to Trimble Business Center.

The AutoCAD Civil 3D Importer for Trimble Business Center is a free, downloadable application. This tool imports DWG files from AutoCAD into the Trimble Business Center. The modeling information is then used to manage and distribute data for site positioning and grade control.

Among the benefits of the data exchange tool are reduced data preparation time and costs and a more simplified workflow.

This link will help bridge the gaps between engineering and construction. The scenarios and project simulations civil engineers perform in AutoCAD Civil 3D can now be exported to the Trimble Business Center software, which is used by the construction team to manage and track data in the field.
