Keeping Track of Assets
December 18, 2009
In today’s market, construction companies are looking for ways to save money. While there are a number of different technologies contractors can use to reduce costs, one way is to minimize the amount of theft on a jobsite and increase the efficiency of equipment operation in the field.
The carriers are coming to market with more partnerships and solutions to help businesses and construction companies track and monitor assets in the field. As just one example, AT&T, www.att.com, Dallas, Texas, recently announced a new tracking application to help monitor the location of assets in the field.
Using GPS (global positioning system) technology and delivered in the SaaS (software-as-a-service) model, TeleNav, www.telenav.com, Sunnyvale, Calif., Asset Tracker from AT&T tracks and provides location-based information on field-based assets such as construction equipment.
This type of technology allows construction companies to keep an eye on expensive equipment, prevent theft, and improve efficiency of the daily use of the asset. The device can be attached to a variety of assets. Companies can then access the information from a Web-based reporting portal.
Sal Dhanani, co-founder and vice president, products and marketing, TeleNav, says the TeleNav Asset Tracker gives organizations access to location information, which users can access from the Web. Also, he says TeleNav has worked with AT&T to incorporate features such as motion sensors, improved battery life, and the ability to use the same Web interface as existing TeleNav Track workforce and fleet applications.
More and more contractors are finding asset management technology can help reduce costs and improve efficiencies in the field. While this is just one recent example, there are a number of technology solutions and partnerships that will enable contractors to keep track of equipment.
