Energy Efficiency Modular Home

In Martha’s Vineyard on Green Avenue, a 3,600-sq.ft., three-story, six-bedroom home is also, coincidentally, the first custom-built, energy-efficient modular home in the area.

Westchester Modular Homes, www.westchestermodularhomes.com, Wingdale, N.Y., and Squash Meadow Construction, www.squashmeadow.com, Vineyard Haven, Mass., collaborated on this project. Westchester manufactured the LEED (Leadership and Energy and Environmental Design) home offsite, completing about 80% of the home before it arrived on Green Avenue.

The home has a HERS (Home Energy Standards Index) of about 50, which means the home is 48% to 52% more efficient than construction that is built to code. Other green elements include reduced waste, energy-efficient applications, and a landscaping design that eliminates the need for irrigation.

“With the increased emphasis on energy efficiency, we expect to manufacture more and more homes to LEED specifications,” says John Colucci, vice president of sales and marketing, Westchester Modular Homes. “This is good for the environment, the community, and the economy.”

According to the company, the off-site fabrication allowed for material efficient framing. The energy-efficient homes are designed and constructed using software in factory-controlled conditions.
